Personally, I don’t subscribe to the idea of separating an artist from their art.
I think that unfairly removes the art from its source. The art didn’t come from nowhere so why act like it did? Bowie was flawed in unforgivable ways, but he was also larger than life in overwhelming , incredible ways. I think David Bowie speaks to a larger narrative of legends and their messy realities. It’s a difficult thing to reconcile a persons horrible actions with their accomplishments because it should be difficult; people aren’t two-dimensional. It’s difficult because people are messy and problematic, especially people that don’t subscribe to a set of determinative values as ascribed by others. Tumblr’s fascination with weaving out the problematic to be left for dead, and exalting the holy faves is problematic itself. Making a general bipartisan realm for others to place their opinions ignores the specific connections, experiences and the emotional value that people can hold toward adoration figures that splinters on to both yes and no sections. People are disgusting, fascinating, and highly specific beings that will fail indefinitely. It’s important to then specifically evaluate them as a whole being, their works included.
